California Betta Society
Minutes

Regular meeting
February 19, 2000

Meeting held at Round Table Pizza
46600 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA

Minutes of the Meeting
4:00pm - 4:30pm General conversations about bettas.
  • One topic discussed was the numbers of fry and the ratio from the spawning of the eggs to the numbers that survive. In those tanks with gravel, only about half the eggs survived to hatch. In those tanks with clean bottoms, nearly all survive. The numbers in a spawning mostly varied depending on when the female was taken out. If the female was taken out of the tank after the first few hours of mating, the eggs would number between 20-50. If the female was left in for over a day, the number of eggs was generally between 200-300 as an average.

4:30pm - 5:15pm Meeting Called to order for Topic "Fish Photography"

  • Demo of a small photo tank {link to picture}
  • Brief talk by Larissa, summarizing some of the points outlined in the notes from Vinny Kutty (fish photographer, webpate at http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/5491/) {notes link} and Kevin Pelletier (betta breeder, webpage at: http://home.earthlink.net/~kpelletier/bubblenest/ ) {notes link}. Contributing information from Craig Scovill and Tanya Laidman (CBS members and experienced photographers)
  • Those members that wanted to experimented with taking pictures of the betta in the phototank with two different types of digital cameras provided by Wendy McKenna and Jan Carpenter.

5:15pm - 6:15pm Meeting progressed to Business items

  • Treasurer's Report
Funds are still currently frozen in the check made out to "CBS". Research is being done with the IRS to find out about getting a Tax ID number. The Bylaws and Articles of Organization are being scanned and retyped for current ratification. When those actions are completed, a bank account will be setup in the name of 'CBS' that the check can be deposited at.

  • Show?
It was discussed whether or not our club should sponsor an official Betta Show this year. The general consensus was that at the moment it would be beyond our resources and that we would work instead on continuing our efforts to revitalize the CBS club.

  • Betta Breeding List and Betta Exchange Program
Forms were passed around for members of the club to outline what strains of bettas they are currently breeding and if they were interested in participating in the Betta Exchange Program.

  • Newsletter and Brochure
The first attempts at a club newsletter and brochure were passed around the group and discussed. Both ideas got sound approval from all members. The idea of a "betta brochure" was discussed with great interest and more suggestions for improvements and alternative ideas, including:
  • small flyers/posters for those stores that would prefer that style for posting.
  • a phone number for contact for those people who do not have easy email access (some discussion also of making the contact specific to a local member of the area (i.e. flyers for the stores in South Bay would have a South Bay member's phone/email, flyers for the stores in East Bay would have an East Bay contact, etc.)).

  • Records and the IBC
Our missing club records was discussed and the question of the degree of our involvement with our parent organization, the IBC (International Betta Congress), was raised.

  • Membership Forms
New membership forms were passed around for the start of a new membership roster. There was one suggestion for alteration of the new form (the addition of a question if currently an IBC member or not).

Discussion was held about putting the forms up on the web (as a form entry box), and was generally held to be a good idea.

Some questions were raised about dues. Current issue is that no dues are necessary until we actually spend money on items. Mailing of newsletters and postcards, and acquisition of door prizes and a club library will be future considerations of club money. There is currently enough money in the frozen club treasury to cover these items until other expenses are incurred (once the treasury is unfrozen).

  • CBS Mailing List
The idea of switching the Mailing List over to OneList/ egroups was brought up. No objections were raised and the move will take place within the next few weeks.

  • Book Referral Program on Web
The idea of putting a reference list up on the web for good informational books about bettas and related topics was discussed. Also providing a link to Amazon.com, who will kick back a small (very small) percentage of the money to the referrer as a method of contributing to the club funds. The idea was enthusiastically received.

  • Fish Store Referrals on the Web
The book discussion sparked off a new and wonderful idea to also put up on the web a listing of local fish stores that the members of the club consider to be good stores with well-cared for fish, quality live foods, and decent prices on supplies. Also enthusiastically received.

  • Meeting Locations and Topics
The meeting location was again discussed. The Fremont Library was proposed as a likely spot that could be utilized on a month-to-month basis with no fees. We would not be able to reserve a spot there until May, so the next couple of meetings are still questionable.

The idea of having rotating meeting spots between South Bay locations and north East Bay was again brought up and was seen as having many advantages as long as the spots and times were well-advertised (web and email, and postcards for non-web members) in advance.

The South Bay spot that seems to be a likely place is at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, where meeting rooms can be reserved with no fees and accessible location in Menlo Park (approx. 280/84).

No suggestions were made for a north East Bay spot (other than the current idea of mid-way Fremont Library). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
